A “What To Wear” Guide for Family Portraits

January 6, 2010

One of the most frequently asked questions we get is “What do we wear for our portraits?” Everyone’s style is different and there are so many choices out there that it’s hard to be really specific. The clothing you choose will have a huge impact on the look of your portraits so it’s very important that you take the time to choose something that represents who you are and how you would like the world to see you. We want you to look fantastic but, most importantly, we want you to be comfortable. Here are a few of our suggestions for looking your best on portrait day:

1) Coordinate in the same color family…this doesn’t mean each person has to wear the same colors. The outfits shown below are a perfect example of how to coordinate colors without looking too “matchy.”

2) Bold, bright colors look great in print so try to stay away from neutral colors if you can.

3) Layers add texture to a portrait. Try layering different fabrics and styles to make the portrait stand out.

4) Women – wear 3/4 sleeves or long sleeves in portraits.

5) Accessories are your friend! Chunky bracelets and interesting necklaces are a definite “DO” for women. Add in a scarf and/or hat and a pair of fab shoes and your portrait is sure to be smokin’ hot.

6) Little girls are always adorable in tutus and pettiskirts. We have several to choose from and they look great with leggings, a tank and a jean jacket.

7) You can’t go wrong with little boys in overalls. Or try a button up shirt with a great tee over it. Newsboy caps or beanies are also lots of fun.

The bottom line is you want your family to look great in your family portrait. This it totally doable without buying an entire wardrobe for everyone in your house. Check out what you’ve already got stashed away in the closet and try some different things. If you aren’t sure, feel free to bring several things and I’ll help you decide what looks best.
